The Saar Canal Route is built on the former towpaths of the canal. Inaugurated in 1866, it once served to transport coal from Lorraine to Alsace and Germany. From Sarreguemines, the great pottery town, the canal winds through the magnificent Saar valley, through the Alsace Bossue and the Lorraine regional nature park. In Gondrexange, it joins the Marne-Rhine Canal.
