Issenheim

The village of Issenheim is located at the foothills of the Vosges mountains at only 2km from the vineyard and the wine route of Alsace. Its topography is particularly adapted to recreational sports for a gentle stopover on the plain, close to the many enjoyable visits in the area surrounding Guebwiller, Soultz and the Pays du Florival.
Issenheim is in particular known for the Antonine convent that is used to house the famous Issenheim altarpiece, painted by Matthias Grünewald. The international reputation of this masterpiece currently makes it the centrepiece of the Unterlinden Museum at Colmar. Visitors in quest of spirituality can visit the convent of the Sœurs de la Divine Providence.
Further evidence of the vitality of this little town is the Gast spinning mill, a mainstay of the industrial heritage of Valley de la Lauch.
Last but not least, visitors who enter through the doors of the Eglise St. André will be rewarded by the sight of the splendid Callinet organ from the XIXth century.
