Baldenheim's fame is undoubtedly its historic church. A true jewel of medieval architecture, not to mention its remarkable frescoes! The Romanesque parish church dates from the end of the 11th century, beginning of the 12th century and is attested in 1371.
Archaeologically very interesting, notably for its numerous burials, the historic church has preserved a medieval painted decoration, unique in Alsace. The choir's wall paintings (15th century) are based on the Schongauer school.
After the introduction of the Reformation in 1576, the church became Protestant. In 1749, the Catholics took over the choir and kept it until a new Catholic church was built in Baldenheim in 1938. This was the period of the simultaneum: a church shared by Protestants and Catholics.
The church contains evidence of all phases of its construction. Although there are some Romanesque elements, the present building is essentially Gothic.
The church has been listed as a historical monument since 1970.
