Mussig, a rural commune in the Ried, is less than 10 km from Sélestat.
Some 500m west of the village, on the meadows bordering the Ill forest, stands out a large group of tumuli, earthen mounds covering one or more graves.
With its 37 recorded burial mounds, Mussig is part of a vast area of necropolises in Central Alsace.
The most remarkable mounds are located in a bucolic area to the north of the road, between the Ill dam and a narrow alder-lined stream, the Brücklisgraben. On the spot, you will discover circular mounds whose height varies between 0.30m and 1.80m and whose diameter between 10 and 30m. Unusual traces, remains of the Iron Age.
These tumuli remain the only remains of the Celtic civilisation and, as such, their preservation is essential for the understanding of this period.
They were classified as a historic monument by ministerial decree on 3 March 1989.
Its historical heritage also includes the Saint-Oswald church and the graves of the 7 Commonwealth soldiers who fell in Alsace.
In the commune, stop at one of the farms to taste the Tomme du Ried. This cheese is made from Ried cow's milk and has a unique taste thanks to the local herbs grazed by the animals. The production of this Tomme helps to preserve and develop the flood plains of the Ried region.
For the amateurs, take part in the annual night-time gourmet walk. You will discover the particularities of the Ried and the hidden landscapes of this beautiful village. The 8.3 km route is punctuated by tasty stops with the scent of local specialities.
Another not-to-be-missed event in Mussig is the Celery Festival. A biannual event where the village comes alive over a weekend with a reconstruction of a farm of yesteryear, a ball, tartes flambées, celery sales...
