As early as 1707, the flourishing abbey of Marmoutier commissioned André Silbermann to build a large organ in the French style. The organ was completed by his son Jean André Silbermann in 1746. The instrument has 1510 pipes, the smallest measuring 4cm and the largest 2.54m.
In 1954, the organ was restored to its original state by the Strasbourg organ builders Mulheisen and Kern, thanks to the action of the "Friends of the Silbermann Organ" of Marmoutier, then in 2010, by the organ builder Blumenroeder.
