The village of Saâles was built in the middle of a 2 km-long plateau lined with mountains on the Via Salinaria as an easy passageway across the Vosges mountains. The town has been known as a trading area for its entire history. In 1743, it was granted the privilege of holding a fair and a market. In 1924, the market was held on the first floor of the rebuilt town hall.
