" Head out to conquer this charming and strange monument on a summit at an elevation of more than 1000 m. This privileged place boasts an unrivalled viewpoint where history meets legend. "
Donon Mountain, rising to 3310 ft, is the highest point in Lower Vosges and marks the border between Alsace and Lorraine. As it is clearly visible from afar it has been considered sacred since prehistoric times. As few people lived in the vicinity, fascinating legends grew up, part myth and part reality. The Romans, duly impressed, dedicated it to Mercury, and early Christians were petrified of it. Victor Hugo was born there in 1802, and a successful imitation of an ancient temple was built on the summit under Napoleon III.You too can conquer the Donon! Take the archaeological path with numerous illustrated explanatory boards that describe and tell the story of the area around you.
