European Heritage Days: Guirbaden Castle

" Dive into history at Guirbaden, the largest castle in Alsace! For the European Heritage Days, explore the mysteries of the Middle Ages with guided tours, an exhibition, children's workshops and a medieval camp. "

Built between the 10th and 13th centuries and surrounded by the Vosges forest, Guirbaden is located 1 km from the village of Mollkirch, on the hills overlooking the Bruche Valley. It is the largest castle in Alsace (2 hectares) and certainly one of the oldest.

The association "Sauver le Guirbaden", founded in April 2015, is offering a rich programme for the European Heritage Days:
- Exhibition of builders' tools, photos and old lithographs
- Guided tours at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm
- Calligraphy demonstration
- Knight's dressing workshop at 11am, 1pm and 3pm
- For children: treasure hunt through the castle and other wooden games, such as chamboule-tout, crossbow shooting, skittles, mill. (Games pass, €5)

A medieval camp will be set up to take you back in time: tents, weapons and shields, a demonstration of how to make a coat of mail, seat and bed, crockery... with volunteers in medieval costume.
Exclusive this year: the presence of Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen at our medieval camp, coming all the way from Germany with his horse and retinue...

Bring walking shoes and keep your eyes peeled!
Medieval snacks available on site.
